Patients with eating disorders in treatment at the clinic have participated in Riksäts evaluation.
All patients who have participated in our inpatient treatment 1990-2019 have also filled in M.H.E. Clinic own questionnaires when the basic treatment begins, after six months when the basic treatment ends, and then two years and five years after that.
During the yars 2007-2016, an avarage of 39,8 (26-53) patients have started the treatment every year. 14% (5,8%-19,2%) of them terminate their treatment before the basic treatment is done. Statistics regarding drop-outs during the years 1990-2006 do not exist.
Statistics regarding treatment results exists for patients who have completed the basic treatment. For example we now (march 2021) have 1 356 patients that ended their basic treatment more than 2 years ago. 264 patients (19%) couldn’t be reached, or didn’t send back their questionnaire, which leaves 1092 patients. When therapy started for these patients, 47 % had anorexia, 30 % had bulimia, 21 % had eating-disorders NOS, and 2 % had binge-eating disorder.
Two years after the basic treatment had ended 71 % (773 patients) did no longer fill the criteria for an eating-disorder, according to DSM IV. Another 23 % were significantly better than when the treatment started. We failed to help about 6 % who didn´t show any significant changes.
We also have 1297 patients that ended their basic treatment more than 5 years ago. 315 patients (24 %) couldn’t be reached, or didn’t send back their questionnaire, which leaves 982 patients. Of these 952 patients, 78 % did no longer fill the criteria for an eating-disorder, according to DSM IV. Another 17 % were significantly better than when the treatment started. We failed to help about 5 % who didn´t show any significant changes.
The majority of the patients treated at the clinic have had their eating disorder for many years and have tried several other treatments earlier. The treatment program consists also usually of only thirty inpatient days during six months time and then about 15-30 follow up days during the year after that.
